"And He said unto them, Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men."
Isaiah 40:29, 31
"He giveth power to the faint; and to them that hath no might He increaseth strength. ..But they that wait upon The Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they walk, and not faint.""The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?"
Way out on a mountain ledge, surrounded by a beautiful blue sky, lived a family of eagles, Papa and Mama along with their newly hatched trio, Georgie, Frankie and Patty. The proud parents took great delight in caring for their little ones, taking turns feeding them and, at the first sight of bad weather, they were right there protecting them with their wings from the fierce wind and rain.
The chicks were growing rapidly and getting more and more active. One of their favorite things to do was to bounce around inside the nest and flap their little wings. Do you know Who put the desire to do that in their hearts? Why do you think He did that? (To prepare the little ones to fly!)
It was during one of these active times that Georgie flapped and bounced so much that he bounced right out of the nest! Papa and Mama watched as his instincts took over. He just kept flapping away until…guess what he was doing? Georgie was flying, a little crooked at first but pretty soon he was soaring gracefully through the sky. After the shock wore off, he thought to himself, "So this is what my wings were made for!" Georgie took another lap around the nest before he landed smoothly back with his family. They all were so proud of his accomplishment and greeted him with cheers of victory for he was doing what God had created him to do!
Frankie wanted so much to experience the thrill of flying through the air, too, so after receiving some coaching from his brave brother, Frankie jumped and leaped right out of the nest, flapping as hard as he could, just like Georgie told him. Things looked a little uncertain at first, but a gentle wind swooped him up and away he went! At last, he, too, was flying!
“Hey, look at me, I’m flying!” Frankie exclaimed, so pleased that he was doing what he was created to do. Georgie joined him in the air as Mama cautioned them on their speed. "Not too fast!" she instructed.
Patty nervously watched her two brave brothers land smoothly back into the nest and, as they talked about their newfound ability, she quietly made a decision. “This is not for me!” she thought to herself. “I don’t care if I never learn to fly!” Now Patty wasn’t a lazy eagle, she just had a lot of fears that needed to be addressed, but a wind of change was about to take place to help her with this particular fear.
Papa and Mama knew that their little eagle would never be content doing anything other than what she was created to do, but it was clear that Patty was not going to try her wings out on her own, so they decided to do what Papa and Mama eagles are known to do, they gently nudged her to the edge of the nest. Patty was grasping at anything to hold on to in order to save herself from what was about to happen. But it happened anyway...they pushed her over the edge, right out of her comfortable nest, all the while instructing her to flap her wings.
There was no time for Patty to be angry; she was quickly falling to the ground. Desperately, she began flapping until she started rising back up into the sky.
"Papa," she cried, "I'm scared!"
"Don't look down, just keep your eyes on me and fly this way." Papa instructed. "You're almost here!"
With shaky knees and a racing heart, Patty landed safely back into the secure nest.
"You did it, Patty! You were flying!" cheered her family.
"I did fly, didn't I?" she said, still a little wobbly. And although she didn't like being thrown out of the nest, she knew that this was the only way for her to try to fly.
Little by little, Patty grew more confident in her flying skills. She no longer was fearful and, as a matter of fact, it felt pretty good to be doing what she was created to do.
The three siblings were now able to go off together and get food for themselves. They especially liked the fresh salmon from the nearby stream and sometimes they would spot a stray rabbit and share it for lunch.
One evening, when all the family was together, they finally admitted to having a problem. Was the nest getting smaller? No, but it did seem that way, it was so crowded! The eaglets were growing so much that there was now no more room in the nest for all of them, but a wind of change was about to take place to remedy this problem, too.
Georgie, being the natural born leader that he was, took action first. He set out one day to look for a sturdy place, high above the activities of the ground, to make a nest for himself and for a future family. When the perfect spot was found, his family rejoiced, they were so proud of him for doing what God had created him to do. Georgie was content with the changes in his life and soon he had his own family to care for.
Frankie, too, felt the need to begin life on his own, so one day he set out to find a place to make his new home. He preferred the very top of a tall tree at the side of a cliff, which pleased his parents well. Soon he, too, had a family of his own to raise.
Patty was doing a lot of thinking with her brothers off on their own now, . "There's so much more room here, now that Georgie and Frankie are gone. I really don't have to move out just yet." she decided. Mama sensed the fear that Patty had within and decided to talk with her, wanting her daughter to be a victorious eagle, not one that was defeated by fear. Once again, a wind of change was about to take place.
"Patty, do you think that you could be happy doing anything other than what you were created to do?" she asked.
After thinking about the question a moment, Patty replied, " Maybe I wouldn't always be happy, but I would feel safe if I could just stay right here. There's so much out there that I don't understand and you and Papa have taught us that we have enemies." I'd really rather stay right here for a little while longer." she concluded, shivering at the thought of running into one of her enemies.
"Well, it's your decision, Patty. Just remember, your Creator made you to soar, and when you tried, you found out that it wasn't so scary. You were also created to bear fruit; to have your own family. It is what gives us great joy!" Mama concluded by saying, you can choose to live in a 'safe' place, although unfruitful, or you can trust your Creator and overcome your fears. He has kept you strong and healthy and He will continue to guide you, but you have to be willing to follow. You will experience great joy when you fulfill God's plan for your life," a wise Mama concluded.
Patty knew that Mama was right. Flying just seemed to be the right thing to do and she was ashamed when she thought back on the way she had to learn. Would it take something as drastic for her to surrender to The Creator's plan of going off and starting her own life? A decision was finally made and with all the courage she could muster, Patty flew off to view all of her possibilities.
It wasn't long until Patty had the cutest nest around, with three little eaglets and their Papa right beside her. She was, again, experiencing the joy in following her Creator's plan for her life, and the fear of trying new things grew dimmer and dimmer as she trusted Him for each victory.
Jesus understands what it's like to leave the comforts of home. He left His beautiful home in Heaven to come down to earth and die for the sins of the world so that we can live with Him in Heaven. He, too, had a reason to leave; He fulfilled His Father's plan for His life down here on this earth.
