Samuel lives in a very small village in Africa. Today was a very special day for him, he turned 7 years old. How excited he was when his mother gave him some birthday money and told him that when they go to the city, he could buy whatever he wanted. Samuel rarely got to go to the city, so this trip would be very special.
What would you buy with birthday money? Samuel thought and thought but couldn't decide on what to buy. When Mother was ready, they went to the city so Samuel could choice a gift. He went from shop to shop and looked at everything in sight. All of a sudden, he stopped. He was right in front of a small shop. Something caught his attention and he went in as fast as he could. He saw something that he had never seen before.
He asked the store keeper, "Sir, what is this?"
The store keeper explained, "This is an umbrella. When the rains come, it will keep you dry."
Samuel did not like getting all wet when it rained so this seemed like the perfect birthday gift. "I'll take it." he said as he handed over his money.
When the rains finally came, Samuel happily picked up his umbrella, tucked it up under his arm and walked throughout his village. But something was wrong, Samuel wasn't keeping dry. "Maybe I'm not holding it right." Samuel said as he placed the unopened umbrella on the top of his head. The rains kept splashing all over him and he was now soaked. He was so embarrassed; all the children were laughing at him. Samuel wished that he never even bought this worthless thing! Just as he tossed it through the air to throw it away, it popped open. Then he understood, he had to open it in order for it to protect him from getting wet. Now he knew how to stay dry when the rains come.
You may think that Samuel was pretty silly, but some of you use you Bibles just like Samuel used his umbrella. You carry it under your arms, but never open it to read it. In order for it to help you through life, you must open The Word of God and read it, obeying it as you read along. Satan tried to keep you from reading and obeying God's Word because through His Word, God shows us His Son.
"In the beginning was The Word, The Word was with God, and The Word was God." John 1:1
Through Jesus, we can have eternal life by trusting Him as Savior and Lord Who paid our sin debt on the cross, raising again after three days and nights, to live evermore.
After we receive Jesus as Savior and Lord, The Word of God reveals to us how God wants us to live for Him.
